Sailing Smart is a national learn-to sail program. Its integrated modular sailing instruction courses introduce recreational sailing and safe boating practices to 8-13 year olds.

The Sailing Smart curriculum is a 30-hour program that introduces students ages 8-13 to the fun of water sports through the use of both muscle-powered boats (canoes, kayaks and/or rowboats) and wind-powered boats (small sailing dinghies). Sailing Smart materials include an Instructor Handbook with curriculum, time frames and tips, the Student Activity book with colorful illustrations and challenging activities, and Boating Basics approved by NASBLA which forms the foundation for the lessons.
  • Learn-to-sail program designed for children without access to water sports
  • Offers standardized curriculum with learning skills progression
  • National youth sailing program administered through US Sailing, the national governing body for the sport of sailing
  • Modular program can be tailored to each community and budget
  • Clearly-stated goals and standards eliminate the guesswork of developing a program
  • Yellow Core Curriculum is designed to meet the licensing requirements for states complying with NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) and United States Coast Guard standards for an approved safe boating cours
  • A Core Curriculum with a sequence of 30-hour courses, each a prerequisite to the next
  • Specialty courses to offer instruction in aquatic-related areas (windsurfing, catamaran sailing, sailboat racing)
  • Each course is independent focused on water safety and recreation instruction
  • Modular design allows scheduling flexibility for use as a summer program, an after school activity or on weekends
Sailing Smart Activity Books are designed to engage students in the excitement of sailing reinforcing their practical on-the-water learning with reviews and hands-on activities to help them develop their skills more quickly and thoroughly. The illustrated text complements the material and sequence of topics in the Instructor Handbook.

Sailing Smart Instructor's Handbook provides detailed course outlines, lesson plans and helpful hints and tips from experienced professionals. It’s a recipe book for a sailing instructor to implement Sailing Smart. It features 10 lesson plans that provide a day-by-day guide for instructors to follow. Each of the 10 lesson plans uses a 3-hour block of time, making the Sailing Smart curriculum easily adaptable to a 5-day, 6-hour period or 3-hour periods over several weeks and months. The format of the Instructor's Handbook makes it easy for a competent boating enthusiast with a fundamental understanding of boats to teach basic skills to beginners in this age group.

Boating Basics is a guide to responsible boating and is used as a foundation for Sailing Smart to ensure that the curriculum fulfills the current National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and United States Coast Guard standards for an approved safe-boating course. Successful completion of the Sailing Smart Yellow Core Curriculum should meet the requirements for states that mandate boating licenses.

Sailing Counselor courses are offered by US Sailingto prepare camp counselors and staff from community sailing, camps and Scouts programs to supervise small boat recreational sailing activities typically conducted on sheltered and protected waters.
Sailing Smart was produced under a grant from The Aquatic Resources (Wallop-Breaux) Trust Fund administered by the US Coast Guard. National Recreation and Park Association Aquatic Section is our marketing partner.
